Client reactions

If you are wondering whether to sign up for a seminar, buy a product or subscribe for the Gold Medal Club, here is what a few of our clients had to say.

Simon Munro raved about the newsletter, Red Card:

I read every word
Although I'm not strictly your target audience I read every word. There is no other newsletter like it in New Zealand covering those issues and I think it is spot on
Simon Munro, Simpson Grierson Solicitors

Here’s what Dave Driscoll had to say about membership of the Gold Medal Club:

I think you guys are doing a great job. I don't care much about the politics of disqualified athletes etc but the info on Sport Management (especially Risk and Health and Safety stuff) is invaluable. And for others I would say it is reversed (like the politics, don't care for the management). Keep up the great work - I'm off to read this issue now.
Dave Driscoll - Momentum Sport and Training

Here is what people had to say about our Sports Liability Seminar:

The seminar made a significant contribution to meeting risk management needs
In today's environment there is a much greater awareness of health and safety issues in sport. The need for advice and guidance for sports administrators and officials has never been more important. The recent Safety Seminar provided by Sportscounsel, which was well attended by a wide variety of sports in Auckland, made a significant contribution to meeting some of those needs. On a personal note, I was grateful for the opportunity to participate in this seminar and gained valuable information from it.
Lesley Milne - Vice President NZ Rowing Association

We couldn't afford NOT to go
We thoroughly enjoyed the Sports Liability Seminar last night. If you’re a sports manager, as I am, or a sports club administrator, or one of those many unpaid volunteer helpers then you should attend one of these seminars. When we originally received the information about the seminar it was not a case of "can the club afford this”, but the club "can’t afford" not to send someone to this seminar. So two of us went for good measure

I enjoyed your enthusiasm
The presentation last night was very useful and I enjoyed your enthusiasm and overall knowledge of relevant issues
Micah Brown, Assistant Recreation and Events, New Plymouth District Council

Sometimes it is hard to find presenters with a good depth of knowledge in the provincial areas
As a Regional Sports Trust we are always looking for opportunities to upskill people in our area. Sports risk management is a very fashionable topic at the moment and people need to be aware of their potential liabilities. When the Sports Risk Management Group approached me to run a seminar in Napier I thought it was a great opportunity for us. Sometimes it is hard to find presenters with a good depth of knowledge in the provincial areas. I found the seminar very relevant and entertaining, especially the legal section which can often be dry and boring. I would definitely recommend it to anyone concerned about risk management in their sport.
Peter Worley, Sport Development Officer, Sport Hawkes Bay

I was worried it may not be useful to the participants
When I was approached by the Sports Risk Management Group to run their Sports Liability Seminar in Taranaki I was a little bit uncertain as to whether the information they would be providing would be useful to the seminar participants. I was pleasantly surprised when I went to the seminar to find that the presentations were very detailed and were relevant to people working in the field. I would definitely recommend the seminar to sporting bodies or event organisers.
John Broadhurst, Sport Development Officer, Sport Taranaki

And then there is our Risk Management in Action Workshop:

By the second night of the workshop it was obvious to me that everyone felt comfortable with risk management and how to put a plan together
When we contacted the Sports Risk Management Group we wanted to run a practical workshop where the participants would walk away feeling comfortable about the concept of risk management planning and have a commitment to implement it within their activity. By the second night of the workshop it was obvious to me that everyone did feel comfortable with risk management and how to put a plan together. I can't say that everyone walked away with a completed plan after the two sessions but they all walked away knowing what they were going to do and that was great. I particularly enjoyed the style of the presenters and their use of practical examples. The legal component of this issue can be particularly bewildering at times but the language used to explain the concepts was easy to understand. I would definitely recommend this workshop to any sports body or regional sports trust who is anxious to raise the standard of risk management planning within their sport or region. We are committed to the risk management process in the Counties Manukau region and will be running another workshop with the Sports Risk Management Group shortly.
Melissa Noble – Events and Marketing Manager, Counties Manukau Sport

How can you make contact with everyone involved in sport to offer your seminar?
Before I came to the Risk Management in Action workshop I knew I needed to know a lot more about Risk Management and liability insurance. Having been to the workshop I know a lot more now. Specifically I have gained a better knowledge of the process of risk management planning and I have a greater understanding of risks and their place in the law. The best thing about the workshop was the active participation and the skills and knowledge of the presenters, in addition to the fact that all groups came out with a risk management plan. I definitely would recommend it and wish everyone in our organisation could attend. Everyone involved in sport needs to be aware of the need for a risk management plan. Unfortunately there are a lot of groups blissfully unaware. My only question is: how can you make contact with every person involved in sport to offer your seminar?

The workshop demystified risk management
Before I came to the Risk Management in Action workshop I didn’t know where to start with preparing a risk management plan. Put simply, it got put into the too hard basket. However, the workshop demystified the risk management concept. The process of putting one together was explained such that it became a realistic proposition. Once I understood the concepts it wasn’t that difficult. I would recommend the workshop to anyone involved in risk management.

Risk management was far too hard for our sport to bother with until we came to this workshop
Risk management was far too hard for our sport to bother with until we came to this workshop. The presenters gave clear presentations of what risk management is about and it helped us greatly to get together in smaller groups to put the plan together. We realised that broken down into smaller plans risk management wasn’t such a huge task. This is an up and coming issue which many of our clubs are ignoring and if they were presented with this topic in the way you have they would understand and maybe implement it!

We found out we are doing quite well
When we came to the workshop we actually found out that we were doing quite with our risk management planning. However, the workshop did help us to identify our shortcomings. It gave us a better understanding of how to put things together, the availability of insurance, and the importance of training our volunteers. We would definitely recommend it

It was hard work but we enjoyed it
Before I came to the workshop I knew it was going to be hard work and I wasn’t disappointed, but not only that I enjoyed it. The best thing about the workshop was that it was a hands on approach that dealt with real life. To have started our risk management plan was a big step for us. We have already started to change the way we do things and initiate a culture of safety. I would recommend this workshop so other people can start the journey we have begun and make their activity safer for all

I only used to pay lip service to risk management – now my eyes have been opened
I only used to pay lip service to risk management but now my eyes have been opened to compliance requirements. The best thing about the Risk Management in Action Workshop was that it was presented in lay man’s terms. The workshop is an essential tool to ensure the safe running of a sports organisation and I would definitely recommend it.

The presenters were captivating
I came to the workshop wanting to be educated on the basic processes of risk management and was very pleased with how comprehensive the workshop was in particular the links back to the Health and Safety Act and legal liabilities. I found the presenters very interesting and almost captivating! I also appreciated the diverse knowledge and experiences of the participants. I would definitely recommend it.

The workshop opened a lot of different situations and the risks involved in anything, not just organizing events
The workshop opened a lot of different situations and the risks involved in anything, not just organizing events. It also gave me more information to incorporate some of the ideas mentioned into my Risk Management plan when planning a sports club and events. I went to the seminar open minded but you do get apprehensive about anything thinking you might not be in the same league as other participants. Now having gone thru it and knowing more, it has triggered other thoughts, ideas and others that need to covered. I now have a whole new outlook in what is required to plan a successful event. It also added doubt on whether it was worth the hassle in organizing any event. But I guess what it all comes down to is common sense and that is having something to cover yourself of any mishap and also hoping people have the same common sense to not put themselves at risk. I would recommend this workshop to any person looking at running an event. Also to businesses and other areas of the public as an aware thing…just letting them know it is there and know where to go…eg schools, churches, etc…Thank you to the speakers for their input ad their encouragement and information and also those involved putting it together.
